You live in a busy town or village? Then, certainly, you seek a quiet place from time to time. But what if you would have to live in that place forever? Because, every noise would mean certain death? Lee Abbott, his wife and children experience exactly that situation in A QUIET PLACE.
Since movies like 28 Days later, we are used to see empty streets without any sign of life after a huge catastrophe. Furthermore, we are used to see a few people who try to survive there. But never before, we saw a lovely couple who does everything to protect their cute children from death in such a heartwarming way.
THE FAMILY – THE ABBOTTS
LEE ABBOTT (JOHN KRASINSKI)
Lee is a caring father who loves his kids. Thus, he teaches them everything what he knows, to give them a chance to survive. Of course, his children admire him. They respect him and feel well protected.
Besides, he is a very sensitive and empathic person who loves his wife very much. But somehow he is in despair, because he knows they cannot live that way any longer. Not least because of Evelyn, his wife. She is pregnant and will give birth soon.
EVELYN ABBOTT (EMILY BLUNT)
While Lee wants to protect his children at any price, Evelyn wants to offer them a good life as well as a cheerful childhood. Thus, both parents complement each other perfectly.
However, Evelyn knows that soon everything will change drastically. Because, she is pregnant during the final stage. Thus, she is afraid about what will happen when she will give birth to her child? How she should prevent noises, from herself as well as from her newborn?
REGAN ABBOTT (MILLICENT SIMMONDS)
Regan grew up in a world of silence. Because, she is deaf. What was a bad luck before, is a good luck now. Because of her disease, the Abbotts have learned the sign language. It helps them to talk with each other without any spoken words. Regan loves her daddy. Together, they try to find a way that she can hear any noises in a world of silence. Thus, together they create a hearing aid.
Howsoever, Regan misses her youngest brother. She feels somehow responsible for his death. Thus, she feels extremely responsible for her brother Marcus.
MARCUS ABBOTT (NOAH JUPE)
Marcus is very smart and mature for his age. He understands things extremely quickly. But, still he is a very young boy. Therefore, he is a little clumsy and fearful. His biggest dream is to drive the old car on the roadside. As Regan, his sister, he is a brave and well-behaved child.
THE SOUND OF SILENCE (A UNIQUESUPPORTING ROLE)
The first time, since probably hundred years, there is a character which you cannot see, but hear – the sound. While the protagonist cannot talk with each other the most time, the sound is dense and deep from the first second.
Never before we experienced a unique sound backdrop like this. Never. The sound lets us forget the reality instantly. It leads us very deep into the story. Furthermore, it makes us laugh with the family as well as cry with them. Moreover, it makes us afraid as well as it brings us calm.
When Lee leads his son to the river, to talk with him under a waterfall, every drop of water lets our heart beating faster and stronger. We stop to breath, because somebody could hear us. Furthermore, we want to enjoy that special moment, which breaks the omnipresent silence.
The Abbotts must prevent any noises. Thus, they walk barefoot. Additionally, they have dropped sand everywhere around their house. Furthermore, they have prepared fireworks and lights to irritate the aliens. But, if all of this will protect them, we will see in A Quiet Place.
In any case, all of it creates sounds and noises which we never will forget. A Quiet Place goes back to the times, when movies convinced the audience because of their story and atmosphere. We remember Alien, when the guy is walking through the hall where condensation water is falling and he is looking for his cat: kitty, kitty, kitty…
STORY VS CGI
For years, we were overwhelmed from CGI and green screen sceneries, a lot of noises and sounds. A Quiet Place reduces everything to the limit. In any case, this is simply amazing and beautiful. The sound shows us, what is important. It enables us to get a close relation to the family. Moreover, it reactivates all of our senses, not only our hearing, but, most of all, our emotions.
Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van Der Ryn (Supervising Sound-Editors), Michael Barosky (Production Sound-Mixer) and Brandon Proctor (Re-Recording-Mixer) were responsible for that amazing sound backdrop. Simply brilliant.
JOHN KRASINSKI (LEE ABBOTT)
I have to be honest, I didn’t know John Krasinski before A Quiet Place. Of course, the actor with Polish-Irish roots has already worked in the Amazon series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”, in “Detroit” and other movies. However, A Quiet Place is his big breakthrough. It has to be.
John Krasinski is not only playing the role of Lee Abbott with such an emotion and intensity, that we share happiness, fear, laugh and tears with that guy in the movie. No. Moreover, John also wrote the script and was the director of A QUIET PLACE. Amazing. Perfect.
Why perfect? Because, so the exceptional talent had the chance to control everything from the first moment. As he recalls:
“I began to listen to everything. The cutlery that touches the plates. The rumble of a shoe we just stripped off. This became a kind of game in our home. My wife (Emily Blunt) and I tried to be as quiet as possible, and if one made even a very quiet noise, the other said quietly: “You are dead!”. Looking back, this proved to be a perfect preparation for the shooting.”
A QUIET PLACE touches because of its emotional atmosphere and its spirit. And not without reason, as John Krasinski explains with reference to Emily Blunt:
It’s so honest, so real and so powerful (…) There was this weird moment while I was filming, in which I completely forgot that I am her husband. I just looked at her performance and was lucky to be in the front row.
EMILY BLUNT (EVELYN ABBOTT)
When I saw A Quiet Place the first time, I felt a very special, moreover, authentic spirit. The relation between the couple was so intensive and dense, that I had the feeling I could touch it.
Later, I understood why. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are a married couple since 2010. Furthermore, together they have two kids. One of them was born shortly before the production of A QUIET PLACE.
Of course, as a true young mother Emily had a special relation to the story. She didn’t have to play a mother who wants to protect her children. She felt so and, much more than this, she was the mother, who must defend the kids against the evil.
Brilliant, Emily Blunt performs in her role as Evelyn. Before, the British actress already belonged to the top league of the international film. But now, with A QUIET PLACE, she belongs to the top 5 of international actresses.
Without any word, she expresses happiness, sarcasm, irony, fear, pain, helplessness. Her performance could be considered as a homage to the great actors of the silent movie epoch.
THE YOUNG STARS OF A QUIET PLACE
NOAH JUPE (MARCUS ABBOTT)
Noah Jupe is really an outstanding talent. Despite his young age, he convinced the public already due to a number of movies, like Wonder and – most of all – Suburbicon. The latter one, alongside Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac and Julianne Moore. However, it’s really rare that a young talent has the ability to perform in that way. Noah touches us with his eyes and emotional play as well as his complete performance. We can feel, he is truly in the story.
MILLICENT SIMMONDS (REGAN ABBOTT)
Also, the deaf actress played along with Julianne Moore, but in the film “Wondersuck”. Besides, she is a brilliant cast for A QUIET PLACE. She hadn’t had to play the role of a deaf child. Much more, she shows the true behavior and feelings of a kid who cannot hear anything. Apart from this, she performs amazing, emotional and intensive in each second.
A QUIET PLACE REVIEW
A QUIET PLACE is the best film in 2018. It’s not a true horror movie, but would we count it to that genre, it’s by far the best movie since years. I thought a long time about that word, but A QUIET PLACE is simply perfect.
The story about a young couple which tries to protect its kids, the emotions and smart story, the images and – of course – the brilliant actors make the movie simply amazing. But, the sound makes it perfect. Never before I felt so many feelings in a cinema. Never, I was so closely connected with the characters. The movie offers many unforgettable moments, such as the moment when Lee (John Krasinski) leads his son Marcus (Noah Jupe) to the waterfall to talk with him just a few words.
Furthermore, when Lee has to decide how he wants to protect the children from the aliens or when Evelyn gives birth to her child – just superlatives come into my mind such as most brilliant, most exiting, most heart touching, most authentic to name just a few.
So, A QUIET PLACE is the first movie which gets 10 points from VALEUR. Not, because of the film itself, but, because of its innovative character. On the one hand, it’s a homage to the beginning of the film industry and the first screen heroes. On the other hand, it’s one of the most innovative movies.
While other films use countless effects, and overload us with action and green screen sceneries, A QUIET PLACE is simply reduced to the basics, acting, story and – most of all – sound.
Thus, A QUIET PLACE is the perfect movie to start into the autumn.
