Exactly 25 years ago, Steven Spielberg created a new era of film. Jurassic Park brought the dinosaurs back into our time and movie theaters. It laid many milestones in film history. Moreover, it laid the foundation stone for a series of films. Now, they are continued with JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM.
As usual, a sequel must be greater than the previous film. Of course, it must show a new story, more action and humor. Furthermore, the audience expects known as well as new faces. In case of JURASSIC WORLD it means also new gigantic and dangerous monsters. However, it’s not so easy outdo the previous episodes when the first one was already nearly perfect. So, let’s see if JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM meets our high expectations.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM – THE PROS
THE MAIN ROLES
Above all, Jurassic Park is made for people, young as well as older ones, who still believe in dreams and adventures. Therefore, each Jurassic Park or World movie is made for and characterized by young people.
Jurassic Park presented an entertaining interaction between the siblings Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim (Joseph Mazzello). They were the first ones who embodied the actual target-group of the movie.
In the next episode, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Dr. Malcom’s daughter Kelly Curtis (Vanessa Lee Chester) brought in a fresh breeze.
Jurassic Park III showed the smart aleck Eric Kirby (Trevor Morgan) while Jurassic World went back to the roots by presenting the love and conflicts between young siblings, embodied by Clair’s nephews Gray (Ty Simpkins) and Zach Mitchell (Nick Robinson).
MAISIE (ISABELLA SERMON)
However, back to JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. Here, Maisie, the young granddaughter of Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) is an absolute highlight. She touches the heart with her sweet sauciness and fresh play. Furthermore, she embodies the spirit of the new generation, fragile but powerful and smart. It is a true pleasure to watch her cute and authentic play.
OWEN (CHRIS PRATT) AND CLAIRE (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD)
The interaction between the rough, cheeky Owen and the reputable, stylish Claire is an entertaining side-story. As many modern couples, both experience an on-off relationship. Always in trouble, but actual also in love with each other, they must find a way to save their own life as well as the life of their friends.
Even, when it seems, that Chris Pratt hadn’t the chance to unfold his complete talent, which we actually know from The Guardians Of The Galaxy, both actors show an authentic and comprehensible performance. They lead us through the story without growing pale alongside the countless dinosaurs and monsters.
And so, we meet the actual key players. In contrast to the prequel, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM goes partly back to the roots. The times are over, when the audience was thrilled by CGI-generated monsters.
Thus, in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM the highest number of animatronic dinosaurs went into action than ever before. The animatronic animals had several advantages.
First of all, the dinosaurs look much more real on the big screen, which helps the audience to create an emotional relation to them or to the respective movie scene. Secondly, the replicated primeval giants allowed an authentic play for the actors. It is a major advantage for the complete story.
THE ACTION & EFFECTS
Of course, JURASSIC PARK as well as JURASSIC WORLD stands for pure action. The war and love between humanity and dinosaurs offers millions of possibilities. There is no moment to take a breath in JURASSIC WOLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. From the first second, the movie takes us to a perfect visual rollercoaster trip. The visual effects as well as the sound let you forget the reality. Hence, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM shows a perfect mix of real sets as well as CGI generated ones.
THE IMAX EXPERIENCE
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM is made for an experience in an IMAX theater. Of course, some people don’t like to wear the heavy glasses. However, from the first second you will leave the theater and you will run and fight alongside Owen, Claire and Maisie. Moreover, the dinosaurs will leave the big screen to take a seat next beside you – or to eat it, hopefully not you. However, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM is a modern film, made for an outstanding 3D experience in modern movie theaters. Therefore, finally, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM lays a new milestone in movie history.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM – THE CONS
THE SUPPORTING ROLES
Like the most films, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM has some weak points too. First of all, we have to mention the supporting roles. Actually, all of them are quite pale. The bad guys aren’t really bad, the good ones have no time to show their character. Of course, it’s owing to the circumstance that the focus lies on the reptiles and action and typically for the JURASSIC PARK/WORLD saga.
It’s actually the same problem with the story. Of course, meanwhile it’s difficult to show something new. The producers tried to do the best. Therefore, the plot of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM isn’t about sending a squad to save people from an island. But this time it’s about a rescue mission to save dinosaurs from another catastrophe. It’s a new point of view, but the same old story. For the next episode, it would be desirable, to get presented something real new. Then, JURASSIC WORLD would make JURASSIC PARK all honor.
THE THRILL & HORROR
Finally, a last individual thing should be mentioned. While we experienced already many shocking moments in JURASSIC PARK twenty-five years ago, we miss this thrill in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. In contrast to movies like Deadpool 2, Universal choose the save PG-13 way and addresses this movie to a wide target group. This commercial focus leads to some strange or dubious but in general weak scenes. They reduce the thrill and authenticity enormously. These key scenes aren’t comparable with those which we know from the prequels. We miss unforgettable shocking moments like that one, when lawyer Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero) lands in the gigantic mouth of a T-Rex in JURASSIC PARK. However, hopefully the producers will have a bit more courage to provide us a much more authentic wild jungle next time.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM continues the saga with respect to the origin episodes. It’s an entertaining movie, with weaknesses regarding plot and the supporting characters. However, the effects and atmosphere are simply amazing. The main characters as well as the dinosaurs are it too. JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM is the perfect movie for the big 3D screen. Therefore, a visit of an IMAX theater in your neighborhood will guarantee the best watching experience and fun. Thus, we give 8 points to JURASSIC WOLD: FALLEN KINGDOM and we look forward to the next episode of that saga.
