Many jobs people have, are challenging and require a lot of effort and mental strength to put in. In fact, lots of professions are designed to help others or make the lives they live much better.
For example, many people honor doctors for their work, because what they do is an obvious and constant need in society.
But what about other jobs where people have to risk their lives? What about those who put themselves and their families behind in order to safe someone else?
This is something the film “Only the brave” from Joseph Kosinski deals with. It presents the hard job of a firefighter and builds a story that couldn’t be more intensive and authentic.
The film was already shown in cinema in spring. Since 11th October 2018, “Only the brave” (German: “No way out – Gegen die Flammen”) is also available on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD Disc. For those who haven’t watched the film yet, now this is your chance to finally get a look.
“Only the brave” is build upon a true story and tragedy that happened in Arizona. An unit of Granite Mountain Hotshots had to fight the terrible Yarnell Hill Fires in June, 2013. Despite the representation of an actual, true event, the film is so much more than that. It shows for once what other films were not able to do.
The daily, impressive work of firefighters and the sacrifices they have to make in order to fulfil their duties and save other people’s lives.
The Unit around supervisor Duane Steinberg (starring Jeff Bridges), Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin), Brendan McDonough (Miles Teller), Chris MacKenzie (Taylor Kitsch) and the other members of the 20 men unit have to get prepared for an unpredictable fire that spreads in the surrounding area.
Superintendent Eric has to train his team to become Hotshots. As so called Hotshots you are one of the best trained firefighter units and therefore authorized to fight local wildfires.
Furthermore, one of the main subjects of the films is how the remarkably working men and their families deal with the pressure and duty to be a firefighter.
THE MAIN CHARACTERS
For the impressively talented actor Josh Brolin it was the fifth film in 2018 he was part of. While Brolin already stared in “Deadpool 2”, “Sicario 2”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter”, “Only the brave” is the perfect supplement to this row.
Moreover, in “Only the brave” he is one of the leading protagonists. The beautiful actress Jennifer Connelly already won an Oscar and Golden Globe award for her stunning performance in “A beautiful mind” (2001). In “Only the brave” she presents the perfect company to her male acting partner. Both play the lovely married couple Eric and Amanda Marsh.
JOSH BROLIN AS ERIC MARSH
Eric is the superintendent of his firefighter unit who is really passionate about his job. Thus, the relationship to his wife suffers under his lack of time and the circumstances. The relationship gets even more difficult when Amanda, who agreed to not have kids, slowly changes her mind. In his firefighter unit, Eric is the leader and respected for his position and work. He always tries to get the best out of his team and trains them in the best possible way.
JENNIFER CONNELLY AS AMANDA MARSH
Jennifer Connelly in the role of Amanda does not play the usual ‘just’ supportive wife. In “Only the brave” Amanda points out her opinion very strong-minded and independent.
Eric loves his wife unconditionally. Still, he struggles much with his duty as a good husband because of his time-consuming passion to be a firefighter.
Therefore, the film shows the strong bond of a loving couple with issues that many among us also have. Brolin and Connelly play their roles so authentically that you can very well find yourself in there.
MILES TELLER AS BRENDAN MCDONOUGH (DONUT)
The American actor Miles Teller, known for films like “The Spectacular Now” (2013), shows his true talent in “Only the brave”. His role as former drug-addict Brendan McDonough imposingly shows how convertible he is as an actor.
Brendan has to struggle with several personal issues.
Still, Eric gives him the chance to prove that he can fulfil something meaningful.
Thus, he lets Brendan join the Granite Mountain Shots who later on fight the brutal flames of Yarnell Hill. Not to forget, he stars the only person of the real accident who survived this horrible tragedy.
TAYLOR KITSCH AS CHRIS MACKENZIE
His growing friendship to his fellow Chris MacKenzie (starring Taylor Kitsch) is impressively emotional.
While first, both are unlike enemies, they find their way to each other and become friends. Furthermore, Taylor Kitsch, most likely known for a couple of television shows and his role as Remy LeBeau/Gambit in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (2009), in “Only the brave” stars the rough, loudmouthed but actually soft Chris.
Therefore, one gets to see how Brendan’s and Chris’ friendship develops with the proceed of the film in such a warm-hearted way.
THE ATMOSPHERE IN “ONLY THE BRAVE”
Director Joseph Kosinski is famous for action films like “Edge of tomorrow” (2014) with Tom Cruise or “Oblivion” (2013) and “Star Trek” (2009). Thus, “Only the brave” was a challenge he truly managed. Sure, many critics were suspicious. Kosinski is popular for the fact that he usually uses many computer graphics and opulent effects to underline his films.
In “Only the brave” he showed another facet and therefore impresses the audience. The film surely includes action elements, because of the visualization of the huge wildfire.
Moreover, you can find a little bit of the usual American heroism in his film. Nevertheless, Kosinski focuses on the characters and the relationships between the firefighters and their families.
The emotionality and respect for their work and the understanding and support of the respective families is the main focus of the film.
To do so, he got help of the talented director of photography Claudio Miranda. For his cinematographic work in Life of Pi (2013) he already won an Oscar.
Thus, it was quite conceivable that he would manage the visualization of such a sensible story like “Only the brave”.
“Only the brave”/”No way out” (German title) is a film that impresses in many different ways. You can find yourself in the everyday struggles of the families.
Furthermore, the dramaturgy of the film as well as the outstanding characters underline the authentic atmosphere perfectly.
The emotions they carry and the way they honor the exceptional job as a firefighter is inspiring to watch.
Nevertheless, the amazing actors like Josh Brolin, Jennifer Connelly and Jeff Bridges are supported by other great talents. Among them Andie MacDowell, Miles Teller and Taylor Kitsch and Natalie Hall.
Kosinski shows that he is able to bring such a sensitive and true story successfully on the screen. He does so by using what still should be in people’s minds more self-evident.
Firefighters do their job every day to save people’s lives and homes by taking the risk to loose their own.
