In Germany and Europe, each kid learns nearly everything about the Second World War in School. Everything? It seems that J.J. Abrams and Julius Avery found some secret sources, which provide impressive information about the things which happened in 1944. The time of the D-Day and the Operation Overlord.
With only hours until D-Day, a team of American paratroopers drop into Nazi-occupied France to carry out a mission that’s crucial to the invasion’s success.
So, tasked with destroying a radio transmitter atop a fortified church, the desperate soldiers join forces with a young French villager to penetrate the walls and take down the tower.
But, in a mysterious Nazi lab beneath the church, the outnumbered G.I.s come face-to-face with enemies unlike any the world has ever seen.
THE CAST & CHARACTERS
JOVAN ADEPO (BOYCE)
The actor made his studio feature film debut opposite Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in Fences (2016). Furthermore, he is known for his work on HBO’s Peabody Award-winning series “The Leftovers” as well as Darren Aronofsky’s feature Mother!, opposite Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem to name just a few.
However, in Operation Overlord, Adepo plays the young soldier Boyce, who has to prove his courage and will to survive already during his first combat mission. Thereby, Boyce has a good heart as well as a distinct sense of justice. Therefore, he doesn’t stop, when the time comes to help his comrades and friends.
MATHILDE OLLIVIER (CHLOE)
The beautiful French actress played the lead in the television film “La Sainte Famille”. Ollivier performed a young nun, who is divided between her position in the church and her natural desires as a woman. Most recently she played a supporting role in Boss Level, starring Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts. Furthermore, she appeared in Miss Atkins’ Army, directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher.
Since her childhood the French actress has had a passion for the arts. She began her training at the Conservatory of the 14th Arrondissement of Paris. Mathilde was consumed for hours by films and memorized all her favorite roles, bringing them to life in scenes with costumes and props.
In 2011, Ollivier became a student at the Cours Simon in Paris. Then, in 2014, she landed the second female role in the musical “Mistinguett, Reine des Années Folles,” directed by François Chouquet. The following year she got the lead in the feature “The Misfortunes of Francois Jane”, directed by Patrick Pearse.
MATHILDE OLLIVIER – A TRUE POWERFUL WOMAN
Moreover, in 2016, Ollivier directed her first short film, Désillusion. She has also started her own production company, La Palette, and is currently in post-production on her first feature, “The Upright Woman”. Additionally, she is producing a documentary that focuses on the struggle of women in Burkina Faso.
Howsoever, in Operation Overlord, Mathilde Ollivier plays the beautiful Chloe. Within the turmoil of war, the young woman takes care of her little brother and aunt. At night, the brave girl goes to the dark forest to look for scrap and some precious items, which could help the small family to survive.
Chloe is a very attractive young woman. Thus, she has to face sexual harassments from the Nazis every day. Therefore, she has many reasons to help the American soldiers, who run into her accidentally.
WYATT RUSSELL (FORD)
He has a very familiar name. No wonder, his parents are the Hollywood legends Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel. Now, Wyatt follows the footsteps of his famous father, who had his international breakthrough also with horror and action movies like “The Thing” and “Escape from New York”. Both movies where directed by John Carpenter.
Wyatt Russel played a lead role in the highly regarded “Playtest” episode of BBC / Netflix’s critically acclaimed series “Black Mirror”. The series was directed by 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg. Furthermore, Russell plays the lead role in the new series “Lodge 49,” a modern fable that centers on an ex-surfer who joins a fraternal order to reclaim the lifestyle he lost when his father died.
In Operation Overlord, Russel plays a taciturn soldier with a secret mission. No one knows his true plans. Thus, the question is, if he will reveal them to the others.
PILOU ASBÆK (WAFNER)
The Danish actor was born in Copenhagen. Here, he graduated from the Danish National School of Theatre. Since then, Asbæk has amassed an impressive resume of diverse roles. Fearlessly, he evolves his body of work with each new project. Moreover, he proves to be one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents in film and television.
He just wrapped production on the eighth and final season of the HBO series “Game of Thrones.” He made his debut in Season 6 as the Lord of the Iron Islands, Euron Greyjoy.
In 2017, Asbæk starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in Rupert Sanders’ “Ghost in the Shell”. It was a live-action adaptation of the anime classic. Asbæk played also in Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s directorial debut Woodshock, opposite Kirsten Dunst.
The handsome Danish artist played also a role in Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur remake, opposite Jack Huston and Morgan Freeman as well as Luc Besson’s Lucy, alongside Scarlett Johansson.
In Operation Overlord, Asbæk plays the German Nazi officer Wafner, who has a penchant for the attractive Chloe. Asbæk plays Wafner extremely convincing, although his role turns into another direction with the time.
J.J. ABRAMS (PRODUCER)
By far, the director, producer, writer and founder of Bad Robot Productions is the most gifted talent that Hollywood has to offer.
Abrams wrote or co-wrote films such as “Regarding Henry”, “Forever Young”, “Joy Ride” and “Armageddon”. Later, he followed that with Alias and the Emmy Award-winning series Lost. Furthermore, in 2006, Abrams directed his first feature film, Mission: Impossible III.
It was followed with the critically-praised hit films Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness. In 2015, Abrams was responsible for the eagerly awaited return of the Jedi. He directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which he also produced and co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan.
Later, Abrams produced “Mission: Impossible” and “Star Trek” franchises as a producer. His own film franchise the “Cloverfield” series was also very successfully. Most recently, he produced the films “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”.
Currently, he is responsible for the production, directing and co-writing of “Star Wars: Episode IX”. J.J. Abrams produces also the television series Westworld, Castle Rock, Lovecraft Country, Demimonde and Little Voice.
Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, Co-CEO of Bad Robot, live in Los Angeles and have three children.
OPERATION OVERLORD – THE REVIEW
With Operation Overlord, J.J. Abrams and Julius Avery present us an entertaining genre mix. What starts as a thrilling and visually stunning war movie, turns into a horror spectacle which is exiting and hilarious at the same time.
Thereby, Operation Overlord has more thrilling moments to offer than Halloween or many other so called “horror” movies of the last time. Apart from this, Operation Overlord presents a very dense atmosphere. Especially the flight scenes at the beginning are simply stunning.
Moreover, the cinematography is very authentic. Furthermore, the chemistry is right between the protagonists. They play their roles absolutely convincingly and with devotion.
Operation Overlord is an action movie which gives almost no time to breath or visit the rest rooms. Of course, it’s a simple movie without any deeper message. But, it’s a film with heart and soul. Moreover, it has a very good cast – above all Mathilde Ollivier. Finally, Overlord convinces because of its amazing pictures as well as a very entertaining story.
Since the autumn has started, we think Operation Overlord is a perfect movie to spend time in a well-tempered cinema in the neighborhood.
We give 7 points. Thus, Operation Overlord is the VALEUR movie of the week.
