The Cold War has never ended. Unintentionally, Dominika, a young ballet dancer from the Bolshoi, gets caught between the fronts of East and West. However, quickly, the smart young Russian learns to play the game of power and intrigues. This and much more happens in the new Jennifer Lawrence film RED SPARROW.
THE STORY OF RED SPARROW
Following a terrible accident, Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) leaves her career with the Bolshoi. She is forced into a state-run school that trains her in sexual manipulation. Author of Red Sparrow Jason Matthews says: “Unlike the other characters in the book, Dominika was primarily imaginary. I wish I had met someone like Dominika. She had a career in the ballet, until it was taken away from her. And then she was forced to go to Sparrow school.”
THE RED SPARROW SCHOOL
Besides a cat-and-mouse game between agents from the East and West, Red Sparrow is about a school, where well selected young people – called Sparrows – learn to forget their fear, moral and decency. They learn just to act in the interest of the state. Moreover, they study the art of seduction to get whatever they want.
However, Dominika is very unique. Well educated, she can’t wipe off her pride and her dignity. But, she has the talent to play with people. Finally, she learns to use her power – caused by her particular appearance and cleverness – to manipulate enemies and friends. Like figures on a chessboard, Dominika understands to lead them into the desired directions.
LAWRENCE & THE CAST
Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence stars in Red Sparrow. She plays the young hero Dominika Egorova. As usual, the exceptional actress did a good job. Also, the other stars in Red Sparrow show a good performance. Among them Jeremy Irons, Joel Edgerton and Matthias Schoenaerts – who looks like a close relative of Vladimir Putin. Whereas, Charlotte Rampling is totally out of place. In Red Sparrow she plays the leader of the school. But, this is, of course, merely an assumption, the grand dame of film didn’t like her role that much. It would be understandable, because the sequences seem to be put together like wrong pieces of a puzzle.
Red Sparrow is a mediocre thriller. Although, Red Sparrow presents a lot of violence and sex – at least we see Jennifer Lawrence nude – the level of thrill and action is quite low. One reason for that, Red Sparrow is much too long. There are too many unnecessary scenes without any content or message.
Last but not least, the worst case is the accent of the Russian characters. It makes really no sense. Furthermore, it undermines the intellect of the audience. Certainly, the spectators all over the world are able to distinguish between Americans and Russians.
Thus, Red Sparrow is a movie with a beautiful Jennifer Lawrence and good actors. Of course, the film is entertaining, but there is a huge lack of action, story and logic. Unfortunately, the attempt to transfer the “The Hunger Games” to the reality of today failed miserably.
