With its dense atmosphere, authentic story, unique characters and amazing actors, Sicario was a true bombshell in 2015. Now, CIA agent Matt (Josh Brolin) and merc Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) come back to the US-Mexican border in Sicario 2.
Of course, both aren’t looking for party or holiday. Matt and Alejandro want to stop attacks from terrorists, who probably enter the USA through Mexico. Therefore, their target is to use rival drug cartels for their purposes.
Since the kingpin of one of these cartels has murdered Alejandro’s family, he is looking for revenge. Thus, it doesn’t need a long time that huge problems occur. Finally, the team reaches a point of no return, when they kidnap the kingpin’s daughter Isabel to inflame a conflict between the cartels.
At the beginning, both soldiers consider Isabel as collateral damage to stop the terrorism. However, with the time both have to answer the question what they are truly fighting for.
A NEW CHAPTER
Sicario 2 can’s reach the class of its prequel. But, it doesn’t mean anything so bad. Sicario was an outstanding movie, surprising, touching, brutal, exciting. It’s difficult to fulfil the demands of the public after a success like this. However, Sicario 2 opens a new chapter in the story. Hence, the film follows different storylines. They reach from a young human trafficker to the relation between a man who lost his daughter and the daughter of the man who killed her.
Again, the atmosphere is dense and touching. From the first scene you are within the film, no chance to escape. The pictures, the sound and the story are excellent.
THE STARS OF SICARIO 2
After “No Way Out”, “Avengers – Infinity War” and “Deadpool 2”, Sicario 2 is the fourth strike for Josh Brolin this year. As usual, he does a brilliant job as well as his partner Benicio Del Toro.
MATT GRAVER (JOSH BROLIN)
Matt believes in his country as well as in justice in general. But he accepts often to go illegal ways to protect law and order. Now, in Sicario 2 we will learn, if he accepts also to betray his best friend.
ALEJANDRO (BENICIO DEL TORO)
Once more, Benicio Del Toro shows the inner strife and conflicts of Alejandro in a touching way. His character is a smart guy, who has to do questionable things. Howsoever, Alejandro is looking for justice and revenge. But, besides, he must decide if he wants to leave Isabel, the daughter of the drug boss who killed his family, to her fate or if he has the responsibility to protect her.
ISABEL REYES (ISABELA MONER)
However, newcomer Isabela Moner is the true highlight of Sicario 2. The young actress shows an amazing authentic performance. She plays the spoiled daughter of a drug boss who learns something about the real life due to her kidnapping. The 17-years old actress plays heart-touching and captivating. Hence, it’s a pleasure to watch her performance.
In general, Sicario 2 – Day of the Soldado is a touching film. It’s an amazing thriller, which sequel could – and should – have the potential to show Mr. Trump and his ideology regarding the Mexican wall the finger. This time, it’s a solid action thriller, with emotional and thoughtful moments, a brilliant cast as well as an amazing and exciting score. VALEUR loves that movie.
